May Days

April showers bring May flowers!

It will be quite some time yet before carpets of wildflowers will fill our mountain meadows!  I have been thinking of them thanks to the local crocus season whose days are numbered.  I did some searching about wildflowers and learned they represent resilience, beauty and the power of nature.  I also found out that many songs have been written about them.  The words beside my watercolour painting are from a song called "Wildflowers" written by Dolly Parton.  Until the meadows are a blanket of colour, looking at my painting will have to be suffice for me.

I also think migrating birds represent resilience, beauty and the power of nature as do all of Mother Natures's creatures.  After getting my vehicle serviced on the first day of May, I was ready to go again on all seasons rather than winters.  Yes I do know winter can hit hard in May!!!  On the second day of May, I dropped by the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. I captured many photos as usual yet it was these four photographs that spoke to me as I felt each face was speaking their own story!  The deer, the coyote, the Osprey and the Robin are all Mother Nature's beautiful creatures.

On the third day of May, I paid Carburn Park another visit even though I was just there a few days prior. I am still reading "Birding for Boomers" and I am truly enjoying it.  While I am not quite in the same age bracket as the author, if I continue to be a birder then I will be prepared for what's to come with limitations and abilities for birding as I age.  The Merlin app and Audubon Bird Guide are great resources for all ages.  I used them both today.

I knew this was a Grebe of some sort, my resources told me it was a male Horned Grebe.

The song sounded familiar but the bird did not look like the Ruby-crowned Kinglet I saw the other day which sang the same song.  My resources told me yes this was a Ruby-crowned Kinglet yet it was a female so no ruby colouring on the crown.

This thing soared circles above me!  It was up there all high and mighty!  Thanks to my great zoom, I was able to capture many shots like this.  I was pretty sure it was an Osprey and my resources proved me right.

There was no need for using resources to ID this Red-breasted Nuthatch. I can name that tune in three notes!  It seems not that long ago, I needed all the resources available to figure out what a Nuthatch was!

Tomorrow the forth day of May, "May the 4th be with you!"
On the fifth day of May I plan to visit one of my favourite places.
Stayed tuned!

  1. Hello Alexandra,
May the 4th be with you!
I am pretty sure I made a mess with my comment. I hope you can delete it.
I enjoyed all your birds and the deer and Coyote. The Grebe reflection is awesome.
I miss the cute Red-breasted Nuthatch, adorable bird. The Robin is busy working on it's nest, it has a mouthful of nesting materials. Great captures of the Osprey, love the flight shot.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your critter post. Take care, have a great week ahead. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

    1. I noticed two comments from you and saw I should pick this one. There seem to be so many Robins every where this year and I am seeing lots of them building nests.

  2. Alexandra,

A beautiful celebration of May’s unfolding wonders! 🌸 Your reflections on wildflowers, birds, and the changing seasons capture the spirit of resilience and beauty so well. I love how you paired your watercolor with Dolly Parton’s "Wildflowers"— a fitting tribute to nature’s quiet strength. And those wildlife portraits from Inglewood truly do seem to speak their own language — each one full of character and grace.

Your journey through birding is inspiring, and I admire how you embrace both technology and personal growth in the process. May the 4th (and the 5th!) bring even more joy to your wild and wonderful wanderings!

    John

  5. A lovely post, Alexandra. Spring is now well established in Southern Ontario and we are all out every day enjoying it. The local woodland, with all the spring ephemerals in bloom and birds singing lustily, is a sensory delight. It's new, exciting and wonderful every year. It never lets us down.
