The full moon for May is called the Flower Moon and will be at its fullest on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 7:53am Mountain Time. It will already be below the horizon so the best times to view it will be the nights of the 22nd and 23rd. Did you know the full moon lasts only an instant and that is when it is directly between the earth and the sun!
In North America flowers bloom in abundance in May which heralds the peak of spring. Spring represents rebirth and renewal. I always feel spring is a more suitable time to make resolutions rather than at the start of a new year.
This is my watercolour painting of the Flower Moon. It will represent May in my 2025 calendar. I had to let my imagination run wild with this one. I wanted a night sky with stars yet I also wanted the flowers to be plentiful, bright and cheerful. Of course, the moon holds its own flower. Once I declared this painting a completed project after adding white splatters for stars and a sparkly star on the top right, I stepped back, examined it and fell in love with it!
It was an easy task to find references to use! These are just a very small sampling of my multitude of flower photos from May outings over the years. I did not try to replicate any of them, I just used them as inspiration.
Wherever I am on the evenings of May 22nd and May 23rd,
I will be over the moon if I get to admire the full Flower Moon!
