Goat Haunt & Kootenai Lake Glacier National Park Montana August 10, 2023

On Monday we put a plan in place to go on an adventure Thursday. On Tuesday we purchased our boat  tickets to Goat Haunt at the far end of Upper Waterton Lake which is in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA.  On Wednesday, I went through the procedure of virtually applying to enter the United States by filling out all pertinent information on an app and doing a scan of my passport.  “Status Pending” appeared on the screen and within five minutes, I was approved!

Fast forward to today and I excitedly waited in line to board the boat to Goat Haunt.

We opted for the inside lower deck for the one hour boat trip.  We cruised across the 49th Parallel and a half hour later, docked at Goat Haunt. A United States Park Ranger greeted us as we disembarked.  Before hitting the hiking trail to Kootenai Lake, some time was invested in checking out the area and reading the notices etc.  This was the view back after leaving the boat and walking the path towards the Ranger Station and pavilion.

Our destination was Kootenai Lake and to get there we hiked on The Continental Divide Trail.

Parts of the trail were quite overgrown yet very green and lush.
There was never a concern nor an issue with this.

This was the view when we arrived at Kootenai Lake.  There is also a backcountry campground here just behind us.  There was no trail around the lake so we enjoyed this location, checking out the views before finding a lunch spot.

We settled on a dry grassy section to have our lunch.  This was our view.

Time was on our side to savour all the sights at Goat Haunt.

There are two main docks here.  This appeared to be a dock for privately owned boats.
While we had lots of time here, it passed by too quickly.
I could see the boat coming to pick us up.

Once the boat arrived, we got in line to wait the 15 minutes before we could board. This was the view while waiting. For the cruise back to Canada, we sat outside at the back of the lower deck.  It was the perfect place to be.

Good-Bye Goat Haunt, Glacier National Park, Montana, United States!

Hello Waterton, Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada!

Even though we were in two separate national parks in two separate countries, they are united as one known as “Waterton Glacier International Peace Park”!  Thank You “Adventure Designer” for planting the seed about this trip.  I was happy to jump on board with you and share in making great memories!

    1. It was an enjoyable experience! It was interesting to meet the backpackers who were hiking along here. We met a guy who was doing the full Continental Divide and started at Mexico. We saw four young girls who were running the 30 mile route in one day, called The Mad Dash from Logan Pass in Montana to Goat Haunt. We met four guys who backpacked from West Glacier to Goat Haunt. There were a few others but we did not get to chat with them.

  3. A beautiful trip in an amazing place: water, mountains, country, cloudy skies, a dock (how many memories.... I worked in a port for 41 years)
