sketching is for the birds

Whimsical!  Light-hearted!  Cheerful!  Colourful!  Those words alone bring a smile to my face yet when I incorporate them into sketches, that smile grows even wider!  After learning about what birds winter in my neighbourhood plus searching for what they look like surrounded by snow, the creative juices then began to flow.

All three projects are sketched on a bristol smooth surface measuring 9in by 12in.  The colour pencils used are a mix of Goldfaber Faber-Castell, Premier Prismacolor and for the first time I tried Caran D'ache.   The snow and snowflakes are made using a white Signo gel roll pen.

The Black-Capped Chickadee is all dolled up in her matchy matchy winter wear!  A White-Breasted Nuthatch could never keep a hat on its head as it spends the majority of time upside down.  The leg warmers pair perfectly with his scarf.  Of course an orange toque is the obvious colour of choice for this Northern Flicker.

Are you now smiling too?
